Disciplines:  Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related major

Background:  NOTE: This project is being offered by a Caltech alum and will take place in Playa Vista, CA (Los Angeles area).

The ICT Mixed Reality Lab researches and develops the techniques and technologies needed for immersive virtual reality and mixed reality experiences. In 2012, the MxR Lab developed the FOV2GO, a low-cost smartphone-based virtual reality display that helped usher in the recent renaissance of virtual reality and influenced the development of the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, and Google Cardboard.
Description:  The MxR lab is currently researching how various virtual reality technologies can be used to support learning and training. Some of the technologies involved include drone robotics, 3D audio, 3D capture technologies, and 3D virtual characters.

Under the guidance of the principal investigator, a student working in this project will be matched to a research project based on their skills and experience. They will contribute to the development of a virtual reality application, related to learning or training, and typically written for the Unity game engine in C#. The end goals would be to demonstrate a capability and support an experiment, with human participants, to evaluate the social and cognitive effects of the particular virtual reality technology and application.
