Project:  Maritime Cross-USV Stereo

Background:  JPL leads a variety of maritime robotics projects in perception and autonomy for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). In this project, we are designing a long-range cross USV detection system with lightweight, low cost, camera-based perception hardware and software for use on the robotic vehicles.
Description:  The student will assist in development and testing of algorithms for a vision-based USV perception system. Synchronized image capture from a pair of USVs will allow detection and triangulation of contacts at long ranges. This work may include prototyping computer vision hardware, simulation environments, and evaluating the performance of existing algorithms. The student will also work with image data from USV on-water testing, which may entail manual annotation of logged data to provide ground truth comparisons. The student will contribute to a JPL team of autonomy and computer vision experts.
Student Requirements:  Background in software development. Skills and experience in C/C++, MATLAB, and Linux preferable. Experience in computer vision and embedded electronics desired.
