Project:  Weak Gravitational Lensing

Background:  Weak gravitational lensing is a technique used explore dark matter and dark energy. Through statistical measurements in large data sets (such as existing data sets from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Hubble Space Telescope, and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and upcoming data sets from the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) and the Wide-Field Infrared Space Telescope (WFIRST)) we can detect the distortion of light by gravitational fields, which allows us to probe the distribution of matter in the universe. This technique is equally sensitive to ordinary matter and to dark matter. Because of these unique and powerful capabilities, weak lensing is one of the primary goals of upcoming missions such as LSST and WFIRST.
Description:  The successful applicant will join our group at JPL working on weak gravitational lensing. The applicant will have the opportunity to work on measurements of gravitational lensing by specific structures, loosely called galaxy-galaxy lensing but also encompassing other structures such as cosmic voids; alternately, the applicant may choose to work on the characterization and mitigation of systematic errors in weak lensing for upcoming missions, investigating the subtle ways our data analysis may be biased.
