Project:  Large-Scale Automated Analysis of Volumetric Imaging Data
Disciplines:  Neuroscience, Computer Science
Mentor:  Elizabeth Hong, Assistant Professor of Neuroscience, (BBE),
Background:  Our lab works on the processing of chemical signals by the fruit fly brain. Neural representations are highly distributed in the brain. As such, high-speed volumetric imaging approaches have become increasing important ant for capturing a complete sensory representation. Volumetric population imaging, however, presents several technical challenges, including the reliable recovery of signals arising from a specific individual neuron across multiple trials. These challenges require new image analysis approaches.

Description:  The student will work with several large datasets in the lab to develop an image processing pipeline to reliably and reproducibly segment neural responses with cellular resolution. The student will both refine existing scripts in the lab for image analysis, and extend these manage larger or noisier datasets. A successful student will have the opportunity to extend their work by participating in functional imaging sessions and data collection on projects focused on understanding the circuit-basis for perceptual learning in flies.
Student Requirements:  Students from all options will be considered, but prior programming experience is required. This is a good opportunity for someone who has a background in computer science or computation and is interested in learning more about neuroscience and biological problems. For Caltech students, preference will be given to students who are willing to commit to term-term research for at least 9 hrs/wk. Must be independent and resourceful, and willing to research and implement prior image processing techniques described in the literature. All interested students must complete a short hands-on exercise that will be sent to applicants before coming in to discuss the project.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:

  Program    Available To
       Amgen Scholars    Non-Caltech students only
       SURF    Caltech students only
