Project:  Delineating Mouse Visual System Functional Connectivity with Microstimulation

Background:  As we move about the world, our visual perception does not reflect images and their statistics but rather we experience visual objects and the properties. We are interested in understanding the neural circuits of the brain that give rise to this perceptual process. We are currently working on establishing assays in mice that will test their ability to discriminate visual objects and we hope to use the molecular and genetic tools available in the mouse to understand the neural circuits that give rise to this ability. While the primary and higher order visual areas of the mouse have been delineated (Marshel et al. 2011, Garrett et al. 2014, Zhuang et al. 2017), the hierarchy and flow of information within and between these visual areas remains to be characterized. Establishing this information will further the goal of understanding how these many higher order areas in the mouse visual system relate to specific visual areas in higher mammals such as primates and humans.
Description:  For this project, we would like a candidate to combine a new imaging approach wherein we can image neural activity from all of the mouse visual areas simultaneously (Wekselblatt et al. 2016) while electrically stimulating specific parts of primary and higher order visual areas to assess connectivity between these areas in a manner similar to previous primate studies (Tolias et al. 2005). The ideal candidate should be willing to work with laboratory animals, perform surgeries, and analyze data. Programming experience while not required, would be a great benefit to any candidate. Experience with arduinos or other microcontrollers would also be beneficial.
