Project:  Applying Artificial Intelligence to Model-Based Systems Engineering

Background:  The Europa Clipper mission will place a spacecraft in orbit around Jupiter in order to perform a detailed investigation of the giant planet's moon Europa -- a world that shows strong evidence for an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy crust and which could host conditions favorable for life. The mission would send a highly capable, radiation-tolerant spacecraft into a long, looping orbit around Jupiter to perform repeated close flybys of Europa.

Models of the spacecraft are developed using a variety of tools, and there is a lot of opportunity for streamlining systems engineering using a wide variety of artificial intelligence techniques.
Description:  The student(s) will develop software to enable systems engineers to perform problem solving on their models as specified in SysML. They will develop problem models for the Europa mission using SysML or other languages. They will write software to transform SysML to other problem solving languages. They will develop server software for performing a variety of problem solving services. They may also develop user interfaces for using these services. Students will be exposed to research in AI and computer language design. Specific student goals will be based on their background, interests and those of their team members.

Student Requirements:  The students should be interested in artificial intelligence, operations research, robotics, or statistics. Desired but not required skills/courses include Unix command line, Java, Scala, data structures, algorithms, artificial intelligence, probability/statistics, calculus, SysML, MagicDraw, Mathematica, Modelica.
