Project:  In-orbit Capture Mechanism Design for Mars Sample Return
Disciplines:  Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering
Mentor:  Paulo Younse, (JPL), Paulo.J.Younse@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (818) 393-6706
Background:  The proposed Mars sample return campaign will return rock cores from Mars. These samples are planned for collection with the Mars 2020 rover and launch into orbit with a followup mission. The proposed Next Mars Orbiter (NeMO) is planned to have a capture mechanism to capture the samples in-orbit for return to Earth.
Description:  The project will consist of designing mechanical devices using CAD software on the computer, ordering and assembling parts for prototyping on a workbench, testing the capture techniques in the lab, and reporting on capture performance and recommendations for future development.
Student Requirements:  Physics, mechanical design, materials science, thermodynamics, Solidworks or CAD design
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.
