Project:  Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) parts insertion into Space Systems: Innovative Methods and Techniques for Low-Cost Risk Mitigation of COTS Parts exposed to space environments

Background:  The objective of this task is to expedite the infusion of state-of-the-art commercial electronic components by assessing risk and reliability of COTS parts through the use of use of simulation techniques that deploy physics-based models to predict the TTF of a component in a given space environment.
Description:  An alternative methodology to predict and assess the reliability of COTS parts in space environments without the traditional part Mil-Spec qualification or DESC certification is highly desirable, particularly for Type 2 Small-Sats and CubeSats, as well as Type I Class D missions. Low cost and short spacecraft development life cycle are two main mission drivers when choosing COTS vs Mil-Spec parts. In addition, low power coupled with high performance and functionality are characteristics of parts typically only offered COTS. The objective of this task is to expedite the infusion of state-of-the-art commercial technologies by assessing risk and reliability of COTS parts through the use of physics-based models, using simulation techniques to predict the Time-to-Failure (TTF) of a component in a given mission environment.
