SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Project:  Path planning and controls for high speed boats
Disciplines:  Computer Science, Electrical Engineering

Background:  US Citizen Preferred. EE / CS student for fall / spring coop or internship.
Description:  Developing and deploying multi-robot path planning and controls for up to 5 unmanned surface vessels traveling at high speed in close formations.
Student Requirements:  Required: Some knowledge of controls and path planning, best if it is in VO or RVO, PID, MPC, or similar algorithms. C/C++ coding experience required. Must have some interest in doing field experiments: i.e., going out to the ocean and riding along on the boats, hooking up hardware, etc. Required to have an interest in very robust code (It needs to start up, run, and never, ever crash). Very helpful to have experience modelling and characterizing dynamic systems. Helpful to have experience in basic EE such as wiring +soldering, specing out power supplies and embedded boards, ideas for cross-platform communication at the hardware level. Helpful to have experience flashing operating systems and setting boot flags in Grub / CentOS (will train otherwise).
