SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Searching for Martian Sedimentary Iron Oxide Deposits
Discipline:  Planetary Science
Mentor:  Abigail Fraeman, (JPL),, Phone: (626) 616-5071
Background:  Thousands of candidate sedimentary, stratified Martian outcrops have been identified and cataloged from HiRISE images, and hundreds of these detections are complemented by coordinated CRISM visible near-infrared observations. A global scale investigation of the mineralogy within these layered deposits with a focus on searching for iron oxides (hematite, goethite, ferrihydrite, etc.) will reveal key insights into changing environmental conditions in Martian history.
Description:  This project will involve working with orbital Mars datasets from the HiRISE and CRISM instruments to understand the types of minerals that occur within these deposits and their geologic settings. Depending on the students' interests/results, this project has the potential to focus on global trends seen within the data or detailed analyses of specific site(s) of interest.

Student Requirements:  Mineralogy; Sedimentology/Stratigraphy; Remote Sensing (hyperspectral data analysis)
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.
