SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Mars 2020 SCS Structural Analysis
Disciplines:  Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics; Civil Engineering
Mentor:  Matthew Orzewalla, (JPL), Matthew.A.Orzewalla@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (818) 354-6039
Background:  The Mars 2020 Sample Caching System is offering an internship opportunity in the structural analysis discipline. The desire is to expose the candidate to a mix of a dedicated tool development/engineering understanding task, of broad use to the structural analysis community, and some of the more standard structural analysis project tasks currently being undertaken by the team.
Description:  Tasks include:
Structural analysis of the Mars 2020 Sample Caching System hardware
MMAC sensitivity study of high effective inertia/low effective mass modes
Efficiently interfacing the Nastran HDF formats to Matlab for MMAC and other processing of large results sets
Development of a generalized Neuber rule for finite element stress results allowing for acceptable localized yielding

Student Requirements:  Mechanical Design
Mechanical Engineering
Finite Element Analysis
Scientific Computing (preferably Matlab, but a strong background in programing is sufficient)
CAD Software
FEM Pre/Post Processing Software
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: Yes.
