SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
|Project:||Europa-REASON (sounding radar) Instrument Development|
|Disciplines:||Electrical Engineering, Instruments|
REASON is a low frequency (9 MHz and 60MHz) radar sounder being developed for the Europa Clipper. REASON is designed to probe through the icy surface of Europa, and detect a possible ice-ocean interface.
REASON is currently in Phase B (fabrication of Engineering Models/Prototypes) and testing.
|Description:||REASON engineers are currently refining instrument requirements, including radar performance, instrument interfaces and development of testing plans. Part of this work involves the completion of trade studies, interactions between the instrument and spacecraft engineers, as well as potential field tests. Interface diagrams and documentation is also a primary activity at this time.|
A background in engineering process, especially Electrical or Aerospace, is required, though the specific discipline is fairly broad.
Experience in electronics development (RF and/or Digital) is desirable, as is signal processing, and basic drafting/drawing skills (such as Visio, but NX is a plus). A solid background in electromagnetics or related is also a major plus.
|Location / Safety:||Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.|
