SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Causal Inference
Disciplines:  Philosophy, Neuroscience
Mentor:  Frederick Eberhardt, Professor, (HSS),
Mentor URL:  (opens in new window)
Background:  In my group we are interested in causal inference: Under what circumstances can we tell that a correlation is actually due to a causal relation as opposed to merely being spurious? We analyze data from various sources, including neuroscience and climate science. We develop algorithms and collaborate with domain scientists in our data analysis.
Description:  Students will be trained in the application of methods for causal discovery. They will be involved in a fair amount of coding and algorithm development, data analysis and data presentation. Specific projects or topics can be coordinated to some extent with the applicant.
Student Requirements:  The work involves a fair amount of coding (primarily in python). The research questions are not always clear from the outset, so I expect you to take initiative to explore the data in various ways on your own. You have to be interested in exploratory data analysis and should ideally have coded an independent project in python before. This is collaborative work in a group, so I also expect that the applicant has very good writing, presentation and communication skills.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:

  Program    Available To
       Amgen Scholars    Non-Caltech students only
SURF    both Caltech and non-Caltech students
