SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
|Project:||Protein biogenesis and quality control|
Assistant Professor of Biology, (BBE),
|Mentor URL:||voorheeslab.caltech.edu (opens in new window)|
|Background:||The Voorhees lab studies how cells regulate the biogenesis and quality control of nascent proteins. We are particularly interested in understanding both how proteins are accurately localized and assembled, as well as the molecular surveillance pathways that recognize and degrade proteins and mRNA that fail at any step during their maturation. Defects in protein biogenesis are associated with a variety of human diseases including cancer, neurodegeneration, and many inherited genetic disorders.|
|Description:||Work in our lab involves a combination of cell biological, biochemical, and structural techniques. Development of the specific project will depend on the background and interests of the student. However we are particularly interested in students with previous experience in cell biology and biochemistry.|
|References:||Please see our lab website for additional information and scientific publications: voorheeslab.caltech.edu|
|Student Requirements:||Strong intellectual curiosity, and the ability to be self-motivated and work independently are absolutely required. For SURF students, strong preference will be given to students who commit to research units during the academic year.|
