SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

|Project:||Psyche Helix Tool Development|
|Disciplines:||Computer Science, Other Engineering Disciplines|
Julie Wertz Chen,
|Background:||The Psyche mission is a journey to a unique metal asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. What makes the asteroid Psyche unique is that it appears to be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet, one of the building blocks of our solar system. The Psyche spacecraft is targeted to launch in summer 2022 and travel to the asteroid using solar-electric (low-thrust) propulsion, arriving in 2026, following a Mars flyby and gravity-assist in 2023. The payload includes an imager, magnetometer, and a gamma-ray spectrometer|
|Description:||The project for this summer internship will be to develop a set of software tools that can be used by the Psyche team to help manage the Verification & Validation process in Helix (a database tool that is used by JPL to manage Fault Protection Parameters and other Project Dictionary Items for flight projects). This will include working with the Psyche Avionics Testbed Team, creating & running procedures on the testbed and using that experience to design tools to make it easier for the Testbed team to interface with Helix and tools that make it easier to report Verification Item Status from Helix.|
|Location / Safety:||Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.|
