SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
|Project:||GPS soil-moisture drone|
Research Geophysicist, (GPS),
|Mentor URL:||Scrippsscholars.ucsd.edu/jhaase (opens in new window)|
NOTE: The project is being offered by a Caltech alum and will be conducted at University of California San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, CA.
Extreme precipitation and flooding are challenging to forecast because of the lack of knowledge of antecedent soil moisture at regional scales. We are building a drone deployed soil-moisture sensor based on reflected GPS signals that are sensitive to the dielectric constant of the land surface. The student project will test the equipment and investigate ways to calibrate against atmospheric models and satellite data.
|Description:||Depending on the students interest they can get involved with any of the following aspects of the project: engineering of the drone payload integration, field deployment and measurements, retrieval and analysis of satellite based soil moisture observations, theoretical design of data analysis system, data processing and verification, comparison with model simulations and local soil moisture measurements.|
|Student Requirements:||Suggested: Programming, signal processing|
