SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Mars 2020 LVS Field Test Support
Disciplines:  Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering
Mentor:  Yang Cheng, (JPL), Yang.Cheng@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (818) 354-1857
Background:  Mars 2020 Lander Vision System (LVS) will conduct their final field test in early 2019 in Death Valley and the Mojave Desert. LVS uses imagery to localize a descending spacecraft relative to its environment. A large volume of field test data will be collected to test LVS and verify performance.
Description:  A summer student will help to analyze field test data in support of Mars 2020 LVS validation. This includes reporting on LVS performance and identifying any issues with the data collection and software. Data will consist of imagery of a surrogate Mars landing site in the Mojave Desert taken from a helicopter as well as INS/GPS state information. With guidance and input from mentors, the student will analyze the output of the LVS algorithms used to localize a descending spacecraft relative to ground features. The objective is to characterize algorithm performance and to help identify any problem or shortcomings in both the approach and the processing pipeline..
Student Requirements:  Computer science and mathematics.
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
