Project:  Natural Gas Data Visualization

Background:  JPL develops innovative, miniature instruments to measure natural gas from hand-held and drone instruments. These instruments have great potential to locate and determine the magnitude of natural gas emissions. Currently, no visualization tools exist to convey such information from these instruments (natural gas measurements, winds, 3D location) to the user in real-time in a 3D perspective so that users can efficiently find and grade natural gas emissions. Also, no tools exist to visualize natural gas infrastructure in real-time when doing natural gas leak surveys. Such visualization tools would not only greatly aid in finding and determining the importance of leaks but also to rapidly access the magnitude of natural gas hazardous situations such as pipe ruptures and hurricane aftermath.
Description:  The student will develop 3D data visualization software using the augmented- or virtual- reality tools. This software will display to the user existing natural gas infrastructure (e.g. pipelines) and 3D localization of high methane readings. The baseline plan will be to implement the software on the Microsoft Hololens.
Student Requirements:  Software development expertise (C, C++, or Python). Preference will be given to those with VR or AR experience.
