SURF@JPL: Announcements of Opportunity
Announcements of Opportunity are posted by JPL technical staff for the SURF@JPL program. Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions!
**Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.
**Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Background: | The Materials Testing, Development, and Failure Investigations group at JPL supports flight projects with material and processing needs. JPL implements specialized materials and processes that require thorough testing and characterization as part of flight qualification. The Materials Test Lab at JPL specializes in assessing materials and processes prior to use on flight systems, as well as failure investigations using a suite of characterization tools, including metallurgical analysis.
Description: | Perform metallurgical analysis for materials development, production support, process development, critical failure investigations, and R&D tasks. Support additional testing, evaluation, and development of materials lab tasks such as structural bonding processes, thermo-optical properties, and microscopy.
Student Requirements: |
Required - Experience in materials characterization techniques, microstructural and fractographic data interpretation, metallographic sample preparation, optical microscopy Suggested - Experience using and interpreting data from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), familiarity with standard materials testing methods |
