Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor. Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions!

*Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.

NOTE: This project is being offered by a Caltech alum and is open only to Caltech students. The project will be conducted at University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Interested applicants should fill out an interest survey no later than February 1 at this site: https://www.solids.group/surf/. The AP/HTPB composite is a standard material for solid rocket propellant, but there is limited understanding of the many thermomechanical effects governing its burn. In this project, we will be coupling a phase field burn front regression model to a fluid phase combustion model for AP/HTPB burn. This will allow us to learn more about the many factors affecting regression rate, and to make predictions regarding optimal AP/HTPB composite characteristics. |

Description: | The student will assist in code development and testing for the project, either for the solid phase or the fluid phase. The project is computational, and we make extensive use of C++ and python programming in a massively parallel high performance computing environment. | ||||||||

Student Requirements: |
Experience with linux/C++/python is desirable. However, students are encouraged to apply even if they do not have this experience, as this can be an excellent opportunity to learn computational skills. Students should also have a basic knowledge of solid mechanics and fluid mechanics, commensurate with their academic status. |
