Amgen Scholars: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty for the Amgen Scholars program.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. For additional tips on identifying a mentor click here.
Please remember:
- Students pursuing Amgen must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status.
- Students pursuing Amgen must complete the 10-week program from June 21 - August 25, 2023. Students must commit to these dates. No exceptions will be made.
- Accepted students must live in provided Caltech housing.

Project: | A photosensor for the readout of barium fluoride scintillator
Discipline: | Physics | ||||||||
Mentor: |
David Hitlin,
Professor, (PMA),

Mentor URL: | http://www.hep.caltech.edu/~hitlin/ (opens in new window)
Background: | Barium fluoride is the fastest known inorganic scintillator, wiiith potential applications in high energy physics and in medicine (PET scan). The scintillation light is in the UV, a difficult regime. We are developing photosensors with the appropriate characteristics to be able to detect this light.
Description: | Measure the characteristics of the photosensors, such as I/V curves, temperature dependence, quantum efficiency as a function of wavelength, etc.
References: | L. Zhang, et al., Spectral Response of UV Photodetectors for Barium Fluoride Crystal Readout. IEEE Trans.Nucl.Sci. 69 (2022) 4, 958.
Student Requirements: | Basic lab experience, use of an oscilloscope and pulse height analyzer.
