Announcements of Opportunity

SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor. Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions!
Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. Click here for more tips on finding a mentor. Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
*Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.
*Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project: | Estimation of computational models of the impact of attention on simple choice using Julia
Disciplines: | Computer Science, Computation and Neural Systems
Mentor: | Antonio Rangel, Bing Prof. of Neuroscience & Economics, (HSS), arangel@caltech.edu
Background: | Cognitive neuroscientists have developed computational models of how visual fixations influence the computation and comparison of the values of options at the time of choice. These models can provide highly accurate predictions about the effect of attention on choices and reaction times, once a small number of free parameters is fit using out-of-sample data. Fitting these parameters is computationally very costly and takes too long with existing software, which has impeded research in this area.
Description: | This project involves building a tool box for estimating the free parameters of the attentional Drift Diffusion Model of simple choice using the Julia programming language. The project will also involve building a simple website to document how to use the toolbox.
