Announcements of Opportunity
SURF@JPL: Announcements of Opportunity
Announcements of Opportunity are posted by JPL technical staff for the SURF@JPL program. Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions!
**Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.
**Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Background: |
Aerie is a simulation framework used for mission analysis, plan generation and sequencing in different missions and studies. Endurance is a proposed moon rover mission which is currently in study phase. There is an ongoing effort using Aerie to perform trade-offs on different technologies and concepts of operations. These trade-offs are used to inform the project in order to make decisions on the design of the rover and the Concept of Operations. |

Description: |
We have developed a tailoring of Aerie for Endurance called VIOLET, which is rapidly growing to increase its level of fidelity. The intern would be responsible for the development of two models for Endurance: 1) Ground Segment: model staffing on ground to operate the spacecraft and their performance based on knowledge of the time required to troubleshoot any spacecraft issue; 2) Telecommunications: model the visibility of orbiters from a given coordinate and the associated communication pass parameters (start time, end time, data volume). In order to make these models, the intern would participate in interviews with experts from Endurance and Mars Sample Return to prepare the model's design. The intern would count with the help of the lead VIOLET architect in all the phases of its work. |
