SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2017 can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Project:  Computational modeling of social learning in humans
Disciplines:  Computation and Neural Systems, Applied and Computational Mathematics
Mentor:  Ralph Adolphs, Professor, (HSS), radolphs@caltech.edu, Phone: 626-395-4486
Mentor URL:  http://www.emotion.caltech.edu  (opens in new window)
Background:  The project investigates a topic from social psychology, using behavioral and neuroscience (MRI) measures. The basic question is how we learn about other people: what biases and stereotypes exist, how do we update these and learn new information, and how do we apply this to our behavioral decisions towards other people. A behavioral component of the project is currently being done by a Caltech student, Olivia Hindera, and we would be interested in future extensions of the work, including brain imaging.
Description:  - Learning about a literature in social psychology and social neuroscience on biases, stereotypes, and learning
- Learning to model how we represent other people, and in particular the learning process, using a mixture of reinforcement learning and Bayesian approaches
- Testing subjects, collecting data, planning the experiment
- Analyzing the data with the models

Student Requirements:  - Programming in matlab required. experience with python and javascript is also good

- Some background in statistics
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:

  Program    Available To
       Amgen Scholars    Non-Caltech students only
SURF    both Caltech and non-Caltech students
