SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2017 can be found here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
|Project:||Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration|
|Disciplines:||Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering|
|Background:||The Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration (BRUIE) is a autonomous robotic vehicle capable of traveling under lake and marine ice, and carrying multiple instruments to explore the ice-water interface and surrounding area. The project is in the middle of a multi-year effort to develop new capabilities for the ocean environment, including variable buoyancy, increased autonomy, and incorporation of new subsystems and designs.|
|Description:||Interns supporting BRUIE will assist in novel subsystem design and testing in the mechanical, electrical, and software realms. Previous students integrated a SLAM electrical system, developed the mechanical subsystem for internal components, and designed new onboard instrumentation. A focus for this summer will be integration of new components and subsystems for variable buoyancy and an electronics revamp.|
|Location / Safety:||Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: Yes.|
