Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Project:  Integration of advanced autonomous navigation algorithms on a miniature quadrotor system

Background:  Micro Air Vehiles (MAVs) in general have a very limited payload capacity, which translates to limited computational abilities of on-board computers. Therefor navigation algorithms have to be tailored and optimized to run on embedded hardware with small size, weight, and power (SWAP) footprints.
State of the art autonomous navigation algorithms
Description:  The goal of this project is to integrate existing algorithms and software to run on embedded flight computers on-board a miniature quadrotor system. This may include interfacing new miniature sensors to the system such that they can be used with our algorithms.

Student Requirements:  Good programming skills in C/C++, and good operating system knowledge (Linux based) are required for this project. Knowledge in ROS, embedded programming on ARM microcontrollers or within the Pixhawk PX4 flight controller stack, and basic soldering knowledge are helpful.
