Project:  Visual Radar

Background:  Vision-based 3D reconstruction from aerial imagery has a long history in computer vision. Usually a single camera is flown at high altitudes and images from different positions are then used to reconstruct the overflown terrain in a structure-from-motion approach. This basic technique can be applied to multiple cameras (e.g. on two different aircraft) that take images of the same terrain.
Description:  The goal of this project is to reconstruct overflown terrain from aerial images of two synchronized cameras that are operated in a non-rigid setup (e.g. on two small quadrotor UAVs), and produce fused elevation maps that can be used for terrain relative navigation at low altitudes.

Student Requirements:  Good programming skills in C/C++, good operating system knowledge (Linux based), and basic knowledge in computer vision are required for this project. Knowledge in ROS and on embedded programming on ARM-based processors can be helpful.
