SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2017 can be found here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
|Project:||Maritime Cross-USV Stereo|
|Disciplines:||Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science|
|Background:||JPL leads a variety of maritime robotics projects in perception and autonomy for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). In this project, we are designing a long-range cross USV detection system with lightweight, low cost, camera-based perception hardware and software for use on the robotic vehicles.|
|Description:||The student will assist in development and testing of algorithms for a vision-based USV perception system. Synchronized image capture from a pair of USVs will allow detection and triangulation of contacts at long ranges. This work may include prototyping computer vision hardware, simulation environments, and evaluating the performance of existing algorithms. The student will also work with image data from USV on-water testing, which may entail manual annotation of logged data to provide ground truth comparisons. The student will contribute to a JPL team of autonomy and computer vision experts.|
|Student Requirements:||Background in software development. Skills and experience in C/C++, MATLAB, and Linux preferable. Experience in computer vision and embedded electronics desired.|
|Location / Safety:||Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.|
