SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2017 can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Project:  Modeling for Satellite Radar Coverage
Discipline:  Aeronautics
Mentor:  Charles Elachi, Professor of Elec. Eng. & Planetary Sci., (EAS), celachi@caltech.edu
AO Contact:  Bronagh Glaser, bglaser@gps.caltech.edu
Background:  There are numerous (almost a dozen) sounder radars in orbit at the present time providing high resolution surface imaging for Earth application.
Description:  Getting past coverage and potential future coverage is well defined based on each satellite orbit and radar instrument geometry. Here, we are interested in the inverse problem. Selecting an Earth surface location and a future time, which satellite will cover that area and at what time close to the desired time. Also, can the outcome be improved by changing the instrument geometry.
Student Requirements:  Good understanding of orbital mechanics and geometric modeling. Because of need to interact with JPL, the student needs to be a US citizen or a legal permanent resident (green card).
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
