SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Project:  Autonomy and Perception for Sample Transfer

Background:  A long term objective for NASA is Mars Sample Return (MSR), a multi-mission effort that will involve rendezvous, capture, and transfer of an orbital sample cache.
Description:  Candidate will implement software and algorithms for recognizing a sample cache in a scene with various sensors such as LIDAR and Stereo cameras, sensor fusion for bring multiple estimates together, and actuating to capture the sample cache.
Student Requirements:  Robotics: Perception, Computer Vision, Planning, Kinematics, Algorithms;
Programming: C, C++, Python, Automake;
Operating Systems: Linux, Ubuntu
