Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Project:  Web-based Visualization Software for Europa Flight Software Testing

Background:  JPLs Flight Software and Avionics Systems Section is developing a multi-mission flight software (FSW) product that will support a wide variety of projects, including the Europa Missions to Jupiters moon. The Flight Software Integration and Test (FIT) team is responsible for the development of automated tests and tooling to verify and validate critical spacecraft functionality. In order to support these activities, the FIT team is developing a web-based tool suite to visualize spacecraft telemetry generated during test sessions.
Description:  In this role, the student will:
Update and improve existing web-based telemetry visualization infrastructure using Javascript Polymer library
Develop new widgets that will provide unique insights into different types of spacecraft telemetry
Interact with FSW engineers to test their software on telemetry generated in both a simulated spacecraft environment and flight-like hardware
Gain understanding of JPL flight software architecture and operations.
Evaluate test results and identify defects in the flight software.
Work independently within the FSW Integration team to advance project goals
Guidance and training will be provided to familiarize the student with their specified tasks, the software development environment, and existing JPL processes and tools.
Student Requirements:  Required
Experience with web-based development
Proficiency with Javascript, HTML, and CSS
Junior or Senior level student with a major in Computer Science or similar discipline.
Self-starter with strong analytical skills and attention to detail
Linux operating system and experience working in a command-line environment
Minimum 3.0 GPA
Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
Familiarity with the Polymer Javascript library
Experience programming in C/C++, Python, and/or shell scripting
Knowledge of Elasticsearch and Kafka
Practice with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Understanding of software configuration management tools (GIT, SVN, etc.)
