SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2017 can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Project:  Anomalous Signals in Astronomical Imaging Surveys
Disciplines:  Astronomy/Astrophysics, Programming
Mentor:  Eric Huff, (JPL), Eric.M.Huff@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (626) 460-9834
Mentor URL:  https://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/Huff/  (opens in new window)
Background:  Wide-field astronomical imaging surveys comprise a large, rich, and rapidly growing source for discovery. These data are typically processed or analyzed separately, and much of the potential potential for new discovery goes unexploited. This AO will build on existing JPL efforts towards efficient analysis of diverse survey data.
Description:  The student will build a proof-of-concept prototype for the joint analysis of imaging data from different astronomical imaging surveys. With minor modifications to existing publicly-available models and tools, they will be able to build a catalog of objects that are not well-fit by the normal range of relevant physical models.

Student Requirements:  Programming skills with C or Python would be very useful.
A good linear algebra background is essential.
Some knowledge of practical statistics will be helpful.
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: Yes.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
