SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Project:  Mars On-orbit Sample Transfer Technologies (MOSTT)

Background:  The Mars Sample Return (MSR) concept is a three mission campaign to return Mars samples to Earth. The campaign could involve a caching rover to collect samples, a sample retrieval rover to fetch samples and deliver them to Mars orbit, and a Sample Return Orbiter (SRO) to return the samples from Mars orbit to Earth.
Description:  This project focuses on producing a development testbed for the on-orbit capture, contraint, cleaning, and transfer of the Orbital Sample (OS).

Student Requirements:  Mechanical design and assembly. Strong CAD skills required, Solidworks desired. Prototyping skills and experience desired. Robotics/electronics experience and familiarity with Arduino/C beneficial. Test design, data collection, and processing.
