Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

|Project:||Simulation for robotic placement of instruments|
|Background:||The InSight mission involves landing a robot on Mars and using its arm to place instruments on the Martian surface. We have developed software that simulates and visualizes this robot. The software is used to construct, plan, and simulate a sequence of commands before sending it to the robot. After InSight lands on Mars, the software will be used to construct the commands that will be sent to Mars.|
|Description:||The project will involve improving the robotic-instrument-placement simulation and visualization software. The student will work on improving the realism of the kinematic settling of the instruments on the ground and comparing the simulation to the results from the physical robot testbed. The student will also work on making the 3D visualization of the instruments, tether, and robotic arm more closely match the testbed results.|
Required skills include experience with programming in C++, experience with 3D visualization, knowledge of basic physics, and familiarity with developing code in a Linux environment.
Familiarity with the Coin3D visualization library is suggested.
