The Mars 2020 mission will be sending a new rover to Mars in the mold of Curiosity, but with a number of enhancements including a range of new instruments and also a major evolution of the Curiosity Ground Data System (GDS).
The Activity Planning and Sequencing Subsystem (APSS) is a component of the Mars 2020 GDS that is responsible for activity planning and integration within a collaborative environment, command and sequence generation and validation, sequence modeling and constraint checking, command translation and re-formatting to send to the rover for execution. A major change for M2020 is cutting down the tactical timeline to almost half that of MSL. In order to achieve this, new suite of tools are being designed and developed with a streamlined workflow from campaign planning to campaign implementation.
APSS is in the early stage of development of many of these tools and provides an opportunity to explore new ideas, concepts, technologies and cloud infrastructure to build the next generation of flight operations.
The project will involve each student in the development of one or more software prototypes of next-generation spacecraft commanding tools, testing the interfaces to Flight Software, improvements to simulation and validation using web services and cloud computing. These prototypes are being built from a combination of Amazon Web Services (AWS), scripts in python, data in S3.
Interns joining the APSS team have the opportunity to work closely with JPL flight and ground system engineers and operators during prototype development.
