The Solar System Visualization (SSV) project team creates and distributes science data visualization (SciViz) products, in collaboration with NASA space and earth science missions. SSV SciViz products are movies, images virtual, augmented reality and holographic (VR-AR) systems. SciViz products are created from: spacecraft instrument - object simulations, models, geometry, texture and motion descriptions (SIM); observations: images, mosaics, movies, photographs and automated scripts (OBS); results, maps, overlays, rational polynomial coefficients and geographic information science environments (MORE). SSV SciViz products display mission operations, features and observations of dynamic processes. The SSV team develops, maintains and operates the JPL/Caltech visualization and image-processing (VIP) center. The Optical and internet communications (OpNet) network connects VIP center severs to JPL displays, NASA mission web pages and over 1000 museums and planetariums.
The student will work with JPL's Solar System Visualization (SSV) Project team in the JPL Virtual Presence in Space (VIP) centers. The student will work with NASA Space and Earth Science mission Project Scientists, Principal Investigators and Co- Investigators and astro-biologists to create visualizations of galaxy, solar system, planet and exo-planet simulations. These visualizations will display the formation and evolution of galactic, solar system and planetary features and dynamic processes. The student will develop python scripts to automate the creation and distribution of SSV movies, slideshows, images and interactive visualization and simulation experiences and environments. These visualizations will be distributed to NASA mission web pages and over 1000 museums and planetariums.
The student will adapt VIP-SSV virtual - augmented reality (VR-AR) systems to visualize simulations of:
1. Galaxy formation, evolution, features and dynamic processes.
2. Solar System formation, evolution, features and dynamic processes.
3. Planet and Exo-planet formation, migration evolution, features and dynamic processes.
VizSim will adapt, control and operate the following SSV-VIP VR-AR Juno mission system components:
1. Alienware Area 51 desk-side workstations equipped with high end NVIDIA GPU boards
2. LG 65" OLED 3D Stereo Displays,
3. Oculus Rift and 5 HTC Vive virtual and augmented reality (VR-AR) headsets.
Students from Caltech will be considered. Previous experience with dynamic simulations, Mathematica, programming graphic processing units (GPUs) pencil pen and ink illustrations and python scripting is desired. There will be no exposure to hazardous materials and conditions.
The visualizations on the Juno mission web site were created by the VIP- SSV team. The student will create similar visualizations and AR-VR system python control scripts.
