Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be

|Project:||Electrical System Design and Validation for Portable Life Detection Instrumentation|
|Disciplines:||Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science|
|Background:||Searching for signs of life on other worlds requires portable chemical analyzers capable of receiving a solid or ice sample and performing a complete chemical analysis. Our group has a variety of different sample handling and analysis instruments that are currently being integrated into portable systems for field deployment in the Atacama Desert, Chile. Current efforts involve complete system integration with associated electronic control.|
Firmware design and integration of an existing control unit of a previously developed subcritical water extractor system. Automation and implementation of several commercial off-the-shelf sub-units (such as pH, ORP, EC, colorimetric and temperature sensors, high pressure pump) via standard bus systems, such as I2C, SPI, RS485/Modbus and UART on a firmware level (C/C++). Development of serial protocol and GUI in LabView.
PCB design, integration of wireless control functionality, power supply design for lasers and electrophoresis high voltage power supplies
|Location / Safety:||Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: No.|
