SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
|Project:||Ismagilov Lab (microfluidics, diagnostics, devices, microbiome)|
|Disciplines:||Chemical Engineering, Medical Engineering|
Professor , (CCE),
|Mentor URL:||http://ismagilovlab.caltech.edu (opens in new window)|
|AO Contact:||Natasha Shelby, email@example.com|
|Background:||Ismagilov Lab has pioneered the development of microfluidic technologies (including droplet-based microfluidics and SlipChip). Microfluidics enables ultrasensitive, quantitative biomarker measurements, and provides tools with which to control and understand the dynamics of complex chemical and biological networks. These technologies are enabling new single-molecule measurements and single-cell analyses. Such capabilities are poised to revolutionize medicine—enabling rapid point-of-care diagnoses under a variety of settings outside of centralized clinical laboratories—and helping us to better understand the human microbiome.|
|Description:||The SURF student would join one of our focused teams in applying these innovative technologies. The following are active projects: (1) developing rapid diagnostics of antimicrobial susceptibility, (2) developing rapid point-of-care diagnostic devices, and (3) developing imaging technologies to better understand host-microbe interactions in the gut.|

|Student Requirements:||Must be able to learn and follow instructions precisely. Skills in one or more of the following areas: basic microbiology, basic biochemistry, basic fluid physics, basic understanding of biology fundamentals including DNA replication, protein synthesis, cell division.|
