|Project:||Searching for Martian Sedimentary Iron Oxide Deposits|
|Background:||Thousands of candidate sedimentary, stratified Martian outcrops have been identified and cataloged from HiRISE images, and hundreds of these detections are complemented by coordinated CRISM visible near-infrared observations. A global scale investigation of the mineralogy within these layered deposits with a focus on searching for iron oxides (hematite, goethite, ferrihydrite, etc.) will reveal key insights into changing environmental conditions in Martian history.|
|Description:||This project will involve working with orbital Mars datasets from the HiRISE and CRISM instruments to understand the types of minerals that occur within these deposits and their geologic settings. Depending on the students' interests/results, this project has the potential to focus on global trends seen within the data or detailed analyses of specific site(s) of interest.|
