SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.

Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2018 can be found here.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Europa Lander Thermal Vacuum Chamber
Disciplines:  Mechanical Engineering, Other
Mentor:  Christopher Sercel, (JPL), christopher.sercel@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (818) 354-1210
Background:  The Europa Lander Sample Acquisition team is developing an advanced 'Europa-simulator' testbed to answer questions about how excavation dynamics change at very low temperature (70 K) and pressure (10^-4 Torr). It will be a dirty chamber, with ice excavation occurring often. Inside will be a robotic arm to hold the excavation/collection tools and several mechanisms for position transfer of ice blocks.
Description:  The student will assist in the final stages of getting the testbed ready for use. This will involve setting up instrumentation (both physical positioning and software interface), analysis of data to determine performance, and execution of actions necessary to improve the chamber based on data collected.
Student Requirements:  The student should have experience working in a lab environment. Experience working with vacuum systems is desired. LabView experience is desired for data collection and instrumentation interface. Experience in CAD (Solidworks/NX) is desired for design of mechanical systems inside the chamber.

Discipline/major is not a strict requirement. Experience and the ability to think critically are more important.
Location / Safety:  Project building and/or room locations: . Student will need special safety training: Yes.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
