SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Additional AOs for the Amgen Scholars program can be found here.
Specific GROWTH projects being offerred for summer 2019 can be found here.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.
|Project:||Computational Approaches to Biomolecular Imaging|
|Disciplines:||Computer Science, Bioengineering|
Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering, (CCE),
|Mentor URL:||http://shapirolab.caltech.edu (opens in new window)|
|Background:||The Shapiro Lab develops biomolecular technologies to enable non-invasive imaging and control of cellular function deep inside living organisms, with applications in basic biology and the development of cell-based diagnostic and therapeutic agents. This work combines protein and cellular engineering with physical and computational methods including ultrasound and magnetic resonance, signal processing, image analysis, simulation and machine learning.|
|Description:||We have an opening for students with a computational background and interest in bioengineering to work on ultrasound signal and image processing and/or the simulation of acoustic and magnetic interactions with tissues. One of the key applications of this work is neuroscience. Motivated students who are interested in combining computation with hands-on experimentation are welcome.|
|References:||Please see our lab website at http://shapirolab.caltech.edu for more information about projects and links to scientific papers.|
|Student Requirements:||Students with computational skills and an interest in biology are welcome to apply. Candidates should be interested in performing research during the academic year in addition to SURFing.|
