SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. Click here for more tips on finding a mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

New for 2021: Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Unknown Famous Names
Disciplines:  History, English
Mentor:  Dehn Gilmore, Professor of English, (HSS), dwg@hss.caltech.edu
Background:  I am currently working on a project about the cultural history of late 19th and early 20th century Britain, that seeks to tell the story of the period through the eyes of four famous siblings--a physicist, a banker, an international law expert and a lady philanthropist. Project is part biography and part cultural history and involves history of science, history of economics, literary history and political history.
Description:  I am looking for a student to help me comb through old newspapers , diaries and other documents, to help me recreate the lives and experiences of the siblings I am focused on. Student will use newspaper databases and photo images of diaries and will refine paleography (handwriting decoding) skills. All work can be done remotely. Student will learn a lot about biographical writing and also a lot about the history of the late Victorian and early Edwardian periods. If student has a particular interest in one area of history (eg: history of science, economic history, Imperial history, women's history, etc) there is scope for secondary research. Reading knowledge of German a bonus but not a requirement.
References:  This is one of the siblings I am working on: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schuster
Student Requirements:  Student need not have any particular background because I will give training on database searching/transcription. But background in history and/or literature and interest in biography as a genre is certainly a plus! Ideally typing skills and patience are also strong suits.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
