Announcements of Opportunity
SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program.
Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.
Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. Click here for more tips on finding a mentor.
Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
New for 2021: Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.
Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Background: |
Section 398 at JPL is currently investing into its Cloud Science Data Systems (SDS) product line which is to be used by various flight missions like SMAP, SWOT and NISAR. The Science Data System is responsible for producing archive quality Science Data Products used by science teams and researchers. |

Description: |
SMAP in the Cloud with HySDS is set to transition to operations later this year and will one the first few missions to be operating completely in the cloud. Currently, operators are able to use an initial implementation of Cloud SDS (HySDS) in the SMAP project and are providing valuable inputs on additions to the tools and interfaces that will help in daily operations. The project is to: - Design and create a Complete Operations Guide to the Cloud Science Data System. This includes any tutorials, deployment guides necessary for a successful delivery of the data system. - This would include interacting with the operators to to be able to write the documents as per their level of understanding - Build/Develop any relevant interfaces, code tools, scripts to make the transition easier for the operators. |
