SURF: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program.

Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. Click here for more tips on finding a mentor.

Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.

New for 2021: Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.

Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be
U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project:  Communications intern for the NASA Disasters Program at JPL
Disciplines:  Earth Science, Environmental Science
Mentor:  Abigail Nastan, (JPL), Abigail.M.Nastan@jpl.nasa.gov, Phone: (818) 354-0709
Background:  The NASA Disasters Program uses Earth-observing data and applied research to improve the prediction of, preparation for, response to, and recovery from hazards and disasters worldwide. Before, during, and after disasters strike, the team coordinates with decision-makers and local governments, providing actionable data to recover from disaster impacts and build resilient communities. The NASA Disasters Program employs coordinators at several NASA centers, including JPL, to serve as liaisons between the program and scientists who produce data relevant to natural hazard response.
Description:  The selected candidate will work with the two JPL coordinators for the NASA Disasters Program to assist with the day-to-day aspects of working between JPL groups and the Disasters Program. This includes updating the JPL Disasters wiki with information on current responses to natural disasters and organizing internal JPL meetings to ensure cross-project awareness. The intern will be invited to attend relevant meetings with the disasters program, JPL groups, and external stakeholders to stay up-to-date on program activities. The intern will also assist with implementing the new JPL disasters communications plan, including a redesign of the wiki and the application of tools such as Google forms and automated reports.
