Amgen Scholars: Announcements of Opportunity

Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty for the Amgen Scholars program.

Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions! Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. For additional tips on identifying a mentor click here.

Please remember:

  • Students pursuing Amgen must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or students with DACA status.
  • Students pursuing Amgen must complete the 10-week program from June 18 - August 23, 2024. Students must commit to these dates. No exceptions will be made.
  • Accepted students must live in provided Caltech housing.

Project:  Visualization interface for the Uranium isotope database
Disciplines:  Geochemistry, Computer Science
Mentor:  Francois Tissot, Assistant Professor, (GPS), tissot@caltech.edu
Mentor URL:  https://isotoparium.org  (opens in new window)
AO Contact:  Haoyu Li, Haoyu.Li@caltech.edu
Background:  The study of uranium (U) isotopes has found applications in a variety of fields including geo/cosmochronology, oceanic paleoredox reconstruction, magmatic differentiation, environmental remediation, and forensic studies. With thousands of newly reported U isotope data each year, a need exists for a comprehensive U isotope database. Our group recently developed a Uranium Isotope Database (UID, https://isotoparium.org/uid), which is a comprehensive, freely accessible, updatable, and internally consistent uranium isotope database. The current version of the UID is an exhaustive Excel sheet. As a result, the user has to download the Excel file to access the UID. To improve the user experience, there is a need to develop an online and interactive searchable database with built-in visualization capabilities.
Description:  The project involves developing a user interface for the UID. The student will work with a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow to design the architecture and functions of the database webpage, as well as the approaches to implementing these features.

Student Requirements:  Programming experience is required. Basic knowledge in geochemistry is desirable but not required.
Programs:  This AO can be done under the following programs:
