Project:  Label-Free, Super-Resolution, Chemical Imaging Using Entangled Stokes and Anti-Stokes Photons

Background:  NOTE: This project is being offered by a Caltech alum and is open only to Caltech students. The project will take place at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.

The project is to provide proof-of-principle results for the development of a transformative, universally applicable, method of super-resolution imaging capable of measuring the positions of molecules separated by distances of 10 nanometers or less. Our method is nondestructive, probes the chemical properties of molecules, and exploits the properties of photons that are entangled. We address the problem as one of quantum estimation and rely upon two-photon interference of quantum mechanically entangled Stokes and anti-Stokes photons. It extends to any substance having a Raman-active, high-frequency (>1000 cm^-1) vibrational mode.
Description:  Depending on student’s interest, they could work on the quantum estimation problem as a theoretical project or do the measurements using the entangled photons experimentally.
