  • Students pursuing Amgen must complete the 10-week program from June 18 - August 23, 2024. Students must commit to these dates. No exceptions will be made.
  • Accepted students must live in provided Caltech housing.

Project:  Diurnal simulations of Venus atmospheric chemistry

Background:  Venus’ atmosphere is composed predominantly of carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen with trace abundances of other gases. Global-average circulation in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) is believed to be one or more Hadley-like cells that extend from the equator to about 60 deg latitude. Three-dimensional simulations with multiple general circulation models show differences that may be able to be discerned through their impact of species distributions. Important tracers of this circulation are observations of CO, OCS, and H2SO4. There are significant uncertainties in the chemistry at high temperatures for these species so sensitivity assessments are needed that explore both the impact of different simulated circulation patterns and a range of chemical reaction rate coefficients. We are extending our one-dimensional, global photochemical model to simulate two-dimensional variations in Venus’ atmospheric chemistry to better simulate the sulfur chemistry that is likely occurring in Venus’ lower atmosphere. These photochemical model simulations will be compared with observations from the Venus Express mission.
Description:  We seek a dependable student who is excited to delve into model development in planetary atmospheric chemistry. The student will work with their mentor to set up and run two-dimensional simulations of Venus atmospheric chemistry, design numerical experiments to test hypotheses, and compare photochemical simulations with observations and/or the results from a general circulation model. Research work may include literature review, assessment of published laboratory and quantum chemistry research, modification of numerical simulation routines, visualization of model output, and statistical analyses to compare model results with observations.

Student Requirements:  The student should have experience in a general chemistry or physics lab or have taken lab courses in chemistry and physics.
