Announcements of Opportunity
SURF: Announcements of Opportunity
Below are Announcements of Opportunity posted by Caltech faculty and JPL technical staff for the SURF program. Each AO indicates whether or not it is open to non-Caltech students. If an AO is NOT open to non-Caltech students, please DO NOT contact the mentor. Announcements of Opportunity are posted as they are received. Please check back regularly for new AO submissions!
Remember: This is just one way that you can go about identifying a suitable project and/or mentor. Click here for more tips on finding a mentor. Announcements for external summer programs are listed here.
*Students applying for JPL projects should complete a SURF@JPL application instead of a "regular" SURF application.
*Students pursuing opportunities at JPL must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents.

Project: | Mass spectrometer signal processing for diagnosis of air quality in Southeast Asia
Disciplines: | Data Science, Chemistry
Mentor: | Paul Wennberg, R Stanton Avery Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry, (EAS), wennberg@caltech.edu

Background: | Caltech mass spectrometers will obtain data on air chemistry across southeast Asia during the NASA ASIA-AQ campaign in spring 2024. See: https://espo.nasa.gov/asia-aq . This project involves improving the signal processing from the Caltech instruments from this mission.
Description: | Data science project to develop new signal processing code to analyze mass spectra obtained from the Caltech Airborne instrument during ASIA-AQ. Project will involve retrieval of chemical information from 5000 M/delta(M) resolution mass spectra. Initial steps include mass alignment, evaluation of lineshape, and development of procedures for removing background ion signals from the spectra.
