Background: |
The project goal is to integrate and test a software defined radio (SDR) based instrument to receive P, S, and L-band signals of opportunity for measuring land surface parameters like snow, soil, and vegetation. This project leverages the increasing availability of signals of opportunity (SoOp) in the P, S, and L-bands for Earth remote sensing. SoOp refers to existing radio signals from sources like communication satellites and GNSS systems. Using SDR technology, we can repurpose these signals for scientific measurements, offering a cost-effective alternative to dedicated satellite missions. Overall, this project contributes to the advancement of SoOp-based remote sensing by developing a versatile and cost-effective instrument for land surface monitoring. The collected data can improve our understanding of hydrological processes and vegetation dynamics.

Description: |
This project offers an opportunity to contribute to the development of a cutting-edge Earth remote sensing instrument. Here's a breakdown of the participant's involvement: -- Software Development for Signal Recording: The participant will work closely with the JPL team, learning from experienced engineers and scientists in the field of SDR and remote sensing. Primary task will be to modify existing software modules for acquiring and recording P, S, and L-band SoOp signals using the SDR. -- Instrument Testing and Validation: Participate in comprehensive testing of the SDR instrument, including: o Laboratory testing to evaluate instrument performance under controlled conditions. o Field testing to assess instrument functionality in real-world environments. o Data analysis to verify the accuracy and reliability of the collected data. -- UAV Integration Planning: Work with the team to design a plan for integrating the SDR instrument onto a UAV platform.
Overall, this project provides valuable experience in: • SDR technology and signal processing. • Earth remote sensing and data analysis. • UAV integration. • Collaboration within a multidisciplinary team at JPL.
This hands-on experience will equip the participant with valuable skills and knowledge applicable to various fields in remote sensing, engineering, and scientific research.
